Google Shopping and American Express have teamed up to celebrate small businesses this holiday season with a new take on the classic window-shopping experience, in the form of shoppable street murals in New York, Los Angeles, Boston and Chicago.
Blending physical shopping inspiration with a digital experience, the murals, which will be live through mid-December, give passersby an interactive way to discover and support local businesses. Each mural was created in partnership with a local artist and features products created and sold by more than 25 small businesses. The murals are shoppable using the Google Lens app on Android or iOS devices; users hold their camera up to the mural and tap on an item to find it online.
The mural project is part of a larger partnership between Google and American Express to help small businesses enhance their digital presence this holiday season. The partners also are offering a free digital workshop for small businesses that walks proprietors through the process of getting their business and products on Google. The workshops will be available on demand through December.
It’s all part of Google’s broader push to become central to the shopping journey of consumers around the world. Other recently released tools have included local grocery pickup tracking via Google Maps and waiving fees for businesses to list on the Google Shopping marketplace.
