Instacart has launched an app on ChatGPT offering end-to-end shopping, including the platform’s Instant Checkout feature, all within the context of a ChatGPT conversation. The Instant Checkout experience is currently available on desktop and mobile web, and will roll out to the Instacart ChatGPT app on iOS and Android in the coming weeks.
“With the Instacart app directly in ChatGPT, users can go from meal planning to checkout in a single, seamless conversation,” said Nick Turley, VP, Head of ChatGPT in a statement.
ChatGPT can surface the Instacart ChatGPT app when a user asks for it by starting a prompt with the word “Instacart,” such as “Instacart, can you help me shop for apple pie ingredients?” The app is designed to help shoppers find what they need from local retailers and present a ready-to-review cart with the help of OpenAI models. Once the list is approved, shoppers can pay with ChatGPT Instant Checkout, with no need to leave the platform. To enable Instant Checkout on iOS, users should ensure they have updated to the latest version of ChatGPT in the iOS app store.
Instacart Leverages Multi-Banner Catalog to Enable AI Grocery Shopping
In launching the ChatGPT integration, Instacart touted its long experience in grocery, noting that it works with more than 1,800 retailers and nearly 100,000 stores nationwide, with a product catalog that encompasses more than 2 billion product instances.
“Powering grocery shopping inside an AI agent requires technology that understands constantly changing, highly local inventory and converts it into accurate, real-time decisions. Instacart’s platform does just that,” said Anirban Kundu, Chief Technology Officer at Instacart in a statement. “Our decade of unmatched grocery data, fulfillment intelligence and deep retailer integrations make it possible to surface the right products based on what’s actually in stock — delivering consumers a shopping experience they can trust.”
In fact, last month Instacart introduced a suite of AI solutions designed specifically for the complexities of grocery retailing, featuring a white-label agentic AI-powered shopping helper called Cart Assistant that will be deployed by Sprouts Farmers Market in the coming months. Separately, Kroger will launch Cart Assistant through its first-party iOS app. In March 2025 Instacart also introduced Smart Shop, powered by generative AI and machine learning to help consumers shop for healthy foods.
Among the other commerce platforms testing out experiences enabled by ChatGPT’s new Instant Checkout capabilities are Walmart, Shopify, Etsy, PayPal and Salesforce.
