Walmart Becomes Latest Retailer to Join ChatGPT’s Instant Checkout

Walmart will join Shopify, Etsy and Salesforce in linking its online catalog with the new ChatGPT Instant Checkout, enabling its customers to shop and buy its products directly within ChatGPT conversations. The Walmart-ChatGPT integration will take effect later this fall and will encompass both Walmart and Sam’s Club offerings.

Walmart framed the move as another step in its ongoing efforts to create “AI-first shopping experiences” that play into its “adaptive retail” ethos — that is, retail experiences that anticipate needs and remove friction for both customers and associates.

“For many years now, ecommerce shopping experiences have consisted of a search bar and a long list of item responses. That is about to change,” said Doug McMillon, President and CEO of Walmart Inc. in a statement. “There is a native AI experience coming that is multi-media, personalized and contextual. We are running towards that more enjoyable and convenient future with Sparky and through partnerships, including this important step with OpenAI.”

  • Using AI to enhance its product catalog in order to reduce fashion production timelines by up to 18 weeks;
  • Enabling a more seamless shopping journey and cutting customer care resolution times by up to 40%, also with the help of AI, including the company’s new AI shopping assistant Sparky;
  • The deployment of AI-powered task management and translation tools for associates;
  • Promoting AI literacy across its workforce by becoming one of the first partners to take advantage of OpenAI Certifications and rolling out ChatGPT Enterprise to teams across the company; and
  • Other initiatives in digital environments, including proprietary mobile games and experiences in gaming platforms like Roblox and Spatial.
