Target to Add Starbucks, Returns and Additional Backup Items to BOPIS Options

Target is planning to enhance its same-day pickup options in fall 2022 with two additional options: shoppers can add Starbucks items to any order and make returns during curbside pickup transactions. Additionally, Target will expand its “backup item” functionality to additional product categories.

Starbucks products were the top request for an addition to Target’s pickup options in a survey of customers, which made it a natural extension of the service. Once the feature is live, shoppers will be able to indicate they’re “on their way” to the store through the Target app and place an order for a Starbucks item, which will be delivered to the customer’s car along with the rest of their purchases.

Curbside returns will follow a similar procedure. Shoppers can initiate the return through the Target app and complete it at the Drive Up lane.

Expansion of its backup item functionality will allow  shoppers to select designated second-choice items from additional product categories, including beauty and household essentials, for their Drive Up and Order Pickup orders. Target already has used this program to successfully substitute food and beverage items 98% of the time, which has helped ensure shoppers always get something they ordered.

“Adding a Starbucks order and easy returns, while expanding our backup item options, will give guests even more of what they love about shopping at Target, quickly and easily,” said Mark Schindele, Chief Stores Officer at Target in a statement. “Ongoing investments in our same-day services have built trust and relevance with our guests, while meeting their needs no matter how they choose to shop.”

The new options will build upon existing functionalities including Adult Beverage pickup; the Shopping Partner feature, which lets customers send someone else to get their order; and Forgot Something, which lets shoppers add more items to their order after it has been place.

Target’s digital sales have more than doubled over the past two years, with Order Pickup, Drive Up and Same-Day Delivery with Shipt accounting for more than half of the growth. The retailer has kept up with demand for these service by tripling the number of store fulfillment experts on staff over the past two years and training all new associates to handle same-day fulfillment.
