Target is putting the “big” in “big box” stores with the opening of seven stores this spring, five of which are larger than the retailer’s 125,000-square-foot average. The stores, opening March 15 in California, New Jersey, North Carolina, Missouri and Texas, are among the 30 new locations Target plans to open in 2026. Looking long-term, Target foresees opening 300 new stores by 2035.
“Our continued commitment to opening new stores is really about showing up for our guests and our communities — and it starts with our incredible store team members,” said Adrienne Costanzo, Chief Stores Officer at Target in a statement. “These new stores give our teams the tools and environments to bring our merchandising strengths to life, create easier and more inspiring shopping experience and use technology to move smarter and faster every day.”
The new stores opening this spring are located in:
- Bakersfield and Delano, Calif. (both stores 148,000 square feet);
- Springfield, Mo. (148,000 square feet);
- Fuquay Varina, N.C. (148,000 square feet);
- Jersey City, N.J. (40,000 square feet);
- West Orange, N.J. (150,000 square feet); and
- Oak Cliff, Texas (110,000 square feet).
Target has been working to increase foot traffic at its stores, with partnerships such as its in-store activation with the Netflix show Stranger Things and turning nearly 2,000 stores into Alpine Villages for the 2025 holiday season. In December 2025 Target opened a revamped design-focused store in NYC’s SoHo.
