Mattress Firm Names Target, Walmart Vet as Chief Marketing and Experience Officer

Mattress Firm has hired retail and technology veteran Mickey Mericle as its new Chief Marketing and Experience Officer. She will oversee the retailer’s marketing, advertising and customer experience initiatives as well as lead the development and execution of Mattress Firm’s brand strategy and develop a forward-thinking media strategy.

Mickey Mericle

Mericle was most recently CMO at the pool and spa maintenance and supply brand Leslie’s, where she led the company’s digital transformation, launched a customer loyalty program and added top-funnel media. She also has held marketing leadership roles at Shutterfly, Adobe, Walmart and Target.

“Mickey has an impressive track record of leading digital transformations, revitalizing brands, developing high-performing teams and delivering results,” said John Eck, President and CEO of Mattress Firm in a statement. “Her broad experience and strong functional expertise will help us further evaluate our marketing function.”

In January 2022 Mattress Firm, which operates more than 2,300 stores, announced its intention to file for an IPO after six years as a privately held company, but has taken no action to go public since then. In its S-1 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission at that time, the retailer said: “Since the beginning of fiscal 2019 [in September 2018], we have fundamentally transformed our business across all functions, leaving us well-positioned to capitalize on growth opportunities and capture market share. As part of this transformation, we rationalized and optimized our store footprint to create a highly productive and profitable store base. We closed more than 950 stores and estimate that we have been able to recapture a significant share of sales from these closed stores through neighboring locations as well as online.”
