Zebra Technologies recently completed the acquisition StepOne Systems, a mobility software company. The terms of the deal have not been released.
With this new purchase, Zebra will be better equipped to provide a cohesive, all-in-one solution for retailers striving to create memorable in-store experiences, according to Nick D’Alessio, Global Practice Leader of Retail for Zebra Technologies.
The StepOne Systems platform empowers store associates by providing real-time access to product details and inventory data, leading to improved customer satisfaction. The combination of StepOne POS software with Zebra hardware is expected to help retailers optimize mobile payment, mobile checkout, in-store customer engagement and store operations.

In light of emerging retail trends such as mobile showrooming, the key goal of the acquisition was to “equip our retail customers with a mobile payment solution to engage shoppers the moment they enter the store,” D’Alessio said in an interview with Retail TouchPoints. Furthermore, by adding StepOne to the list of solutions, Zebra will be able to provide retailers with a more integrated mobile payment solution, he added. “The mobile point of sale software paired with the hardware allows store associates to access information and tools while never leaving the customer’s side. This engagement provides the highest level of service to shoppers, improving their in-store experience and ultimately increasing customer loyalty.”
Commenting on the acquisition, Todd Berner, CEO of StepOne added: “Any successful solution in retail combines software and hardware to ultimately improve the customer experience. We are extremely excited to join the Zebra team in developing relevant solutions that help retailers build brand loyalty and operate more efficiently.”
