Target has begun brewing up a chainwide rollout of one of its most requested services — allowing its Drive Up customers to add Starbucks items to BOPIS orders that are then delivered to their cars at no charge. Target first announced its plans to add the Starbucks ordering option in February 2022 and expanded the pilot to an additional 240 stores in November 2022. The rollout to all 1,700+ Target stores with Starbucks Cafés and Drive Up service is projected to be complete by October 2023.

“Our guests have long told us Drive Up is a game-changer, adding convenience to their daily life, especially when they’re short on time,” said Mark Schindele, Chief Stores Officer at Target in a statement. “This one-of-a-kind service is the latest example of how we’re innovating every day to meet the needs of our guests.”

After a customer places a Drive Up order and receives a notification that it’s ready for pickup, they indicate that they are on their way to the store via the Target app. The customer then receives a prompt in the app to place a food or beverage order from the Starbucks menu. The customer makes their selection, clicks “Add for Drive Up” and pays for the order.

When the customer arrives in the Drive Up parking area and taps “I’m here” in the app, a Target associate delivers the Starbucks order to the shopper’s car along with their Drive Up order.

“Starbucks has a long history of adapting and innovating how we serve our customers, meeting them where they are,” said Mark Ring, SVP, U.S. Licensed Stores, Starbucks Canada and Siren Retail in a statement. “Offering the Starbucks experience to the Target Drive Up guest is a great example of two iconic brands creating a joyful moment in a way that Starbucks and Target are uniquely positioned to do together.”
