Chewy and nonprofit robotics hub MassRobotics have created the CHAMP (Chewy Autonomous Mobile Picking) Challenge, offering $30,000 and the potential to work with Chewy going forward to the winning robotics manufacturer. The challenge addresses the physical demands involved in handling large, heavy products, such as bags, boxes and pails of dog food and cat litter, within confined warehouse spaces.
To compete, the robots will be required to grasp and lift various items from standard pallets; place them accurately into open cardboard boxes, maximizing space use and ensuring stability; and to operate autonomously and collaborate safely with humans in close quarters. An information session will take place on Dec. 4, and applications will close on Dec. 16, 2024.
“We are thrilled to partner with Chewy on the CHAMP Challenge, inviting innovators to address one of the most complex challenges in robotics today,” said Tom Ryden, Executive Director of MassRobotics in a statement. “By bringing together fresh perspectives and advanced technology, we aim to inspire solutions that will push the boundaries of automation in warehouse logistics.”
“At Chewy, innovation isn’t just a goal — it’s in our DNA,” said Tim Foley, Senior Director of Fulfillment Technology at Chewy in a statement. “We’re embarking on a transformative journey to reshape warehouse operations while creating a better experience for our customers and team members alike.”
