Best Buy and Microsoft have collaborated to produce a limited-edition version of the Microsoft Surface 13” Keyboard (a.k.a. Type Covers) decorated with artwork created by a Best Buy Teen Tech Center member and available exclusively through the Best Buy app. The design was chosen as part of the Microsoft Type Cover for a Cause program, which challenged several Teen Tech Center members to come up with designs inspired by their personal story and vision of a sustainable future. Microsoft will donate a portion of each unit sold to the Best Buy Foundation.
“Partners like Microsoft are instrumental in providing opportunities that help young people learn skills they can use to chart their own path,” said Olivia Jefferson, VP of Social Impact at Best Buy in a statement. “Together, we can make an even bigger impact by offering real-world experiences that equip young people with the tools to pursue their dreams now and in the future.”
As part of the collaboration, each teen worked with a Microsoft employee mentor, taking part in virtual workshops over a two-month period that helped bring their unique concepts to life. The program encouraged participants to explore a variety of digital design skills and gave them the opportunity to meet directly with Microsoft leaders, to make connections and learn more about tech career paths.
“It really has been incredible bringing this program to life with our Best Buy Foundation partner,” said Augustus Willman, Program Manager at Microsoft Type Cover for a Cause in a statement. “Having the opportunity to inspire youth to find the joy in possibility through tech while equipping them with the knowledge and skills to make it real has been such a gift.”
In April 2024 Best Buy partnered with Microsoft to encourage recycling by turning e-waste into couture. Earlier this month, Best Buy relaunched its third-party marketplace.
