Delek US Holdings will implement AI-powered self-checkout at more than 70 Delek DK convenience stores in Texas by late summer 2021, through a partnership with Mashgin. The solution will let customers walk in, select the items they want, place them on the Mashgin kiosk tray and have all items recognized and totaled without the need to scan any barcodes.
Delek is adopting the technology to speed up the in-store shopping experience and improve safety, which remains a concern even at the tail end of the pandemic. Customers can pay with a mobile wallet, credit card or debit card, letting them complete the transaction in as little as 10 seconds with no need to touch anything but their purchased items and their form of payment.
“The Mashgin touchless experience in Delek’s DK stores truly supports our mantra of ‘Making Your Day A Little Easier,’” said Tony Miller, EVP at Delek US in a statement. “This mantra is prominent on the front signage of all of our new and reimagined stores as a commitment to our brand promise. Mashgin’s autonomous self-checkout is 300% faster, frictionless, and social distance-friendly. Mashgin is the first initiative of a comprehensive innovation strategy Delek is employing to create a unique shopping experience for its customers.”
The solution will help Delek prepare for what will likely be a contactless future. Mobile wallet usage rose 60% to account for 9.6% of 2020 North American POS spend as shoppers looked for fast, convenient checkout options, according to data from FIS. The company expects contactless checkout adoption to continue growing as shoppers become more comfortable with the technology.
