Walmart, Walgreens, CVS and 18 other retailers will become part of COVID-19 vaccination programs, in partnership with the CDC through the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program. This federal initiative will let the retailers accept and administer allocations of the COVID-19 vaccine in various states. Walmart and Sam’s Club will work in 22 states, Walgreens in 13 states plus Puerto Rico and CVS in 11 states.
The Federal Retail Pharmacy Program, which officially launches on Feb. 11, will include participation from more than 40,000 pharmacy locations nationwide. The program will provide doses to individual pharmacies based on a number of factors, including their ability to reach some of the populations most at risk for severe illness from COVID-19. The initiative is part of President Biden’s goal of administering 100 million shots in 100 days and expanding access to vaccines to more Americans in the coming weeks.
Walmart, Walgreens and CVS, as well as some of the other retailers in the program, were already distributing vaccines in partnership with state and local governments, and will continue to do so even after the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program begins. These local programs have already rolled out to thousands of pharmacies nationwide across all three retailers.
