British grocery chain Tesco is testing the Jade X7 Automated Scanner from Datalogic, a provider of automatic data capture (ADC) solutions, in an effort to improve checkout speed. The technology has been implemented in the newest Tesco Extra store in Lincoln, England.
The barcode scanner is designed to automatically scan items on a checkout belt and visually recognize them at a much higher speed than a traditional checkout configuration. Items are then directed to bagging areas, which helps free up staff to focus on other tasks such as engaging shoppers.
With the new checkout experience, three customers can pack and pay for their items simultaneously, and up to 60 items can be scanned per minute.

“We are always looking for innovative ways to support our colleagues to give great service and to improve the shopping experience for our customers,” said Nigel Fletcher, a Director at Tesco. “We’re looking forward to seeing what our customers in Lincoln think of the new checkouts over the coming weeks and months.”
Datalogic provides the barcode scanner hardware to system integrators that customize checkout installations for retailers. NCR designed the new retail checkout experience for the Tesco store.
