Stop & Shop to Close 32 Underperforming Stores in Northeast by November

Stop & Shop will shutter 32 supermarkets in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island by Nov. 2, 2024. The retailer, a division of Ahold Delhaize, will still operate more than 350 stores in this region following the closures, and associates at the affected stores will be offered alternate positions with the company.

“As we announced in May, Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand,” said Gordon Reid, President of Stop & Shop in a statement. “Stop & Shop is focused on growing through large, multi-year price investments and a stronger customer value proposition, both in stores and online. This means we’ll be focused on delivering lower everyday prices, as well as even more savings for our customers through strong promotions.”

Reid noted that the retailer has completed more than 190 store remodels since 2018 and that these stores are outperforming non-remodeled Stop & Shop locations. “We’re taking these learnings and implementing them at other stores as we build upon our strong foundation, similar to the Boston flagship location that opened last month in the Allston Yards development.”

The retailer will close 10 stores in New Jersey, eight in Massachusetts, seven in New York, five in Connecticut and two in Rhode Island.
