eBay Sees 13% Revenue Increase Over 2012

Total annual revenue for eBay Inc. rose to $4.5 billion in 2013, a 13% increase over the same period  in 2012. Financial results account for all three divisions of eBay: Marketplaces, PayPal and Enterprise.

Marketplaces gained 4.6 million active users in Q4 2013, and ended the year with 128 million active users. PayPal, eBay’s payment division, also saw a successful year, bringing in $6.6 billion in total revenue — a 19% increase between 2012 and 2013. Revenue also increased 19% between Q3 and Q4 2013.

PayPal’s net total payment volume (TPV) grew 25% in Q4, with three billion transactions generating $180 billion in net TPV for the full year.

Both Marketplaces and PayPal achieved record mobile sales results, each exceeding $20 billion in mobile volume during 2013. Mobile users represented 40% of eBay Inc.’s 36 million new users and accounts in 2013, contributing $35 billion in enabled commerce volume (ECV) — an 88% increase over 2012. ECV is the total commerce and payment volume across all eBay Inc. business units.

“Our total mobile commerce volume grew 88%, with eBay reaching $22 billion and PayPal hitting $27 billion in 2013,” said John Donahoe, CEO and President of eBay Inc. “PayPal and eBay together create an incredibly strong global commerce ecosystem for consumers and merchants, and we continue to see tremendous growth opportunities ahead.”

Investor Carl Icahn unsuccessfully lobbied to have PayPal spun out as a separate division. Shortly following, eBay rejected the proposal, citing that the “Board of Directors has concluded that the company and its shareholders are best served by the current strategic direction of the company and does not believe that breaking up the company is the best way to maximize shareholder value.”
