Amazon’s new UK grocery strategy includes a stronger emphasis on delivery, including the addition of same-day perishables delivery in 2026 and a shift in its brick-and-mortar strategy: the retailer will shutter 14 Amazon Fresh stores in the UK and convert five locations to the Whole Foods Market banner. These converted stores, along with the opening of a Whole Foods in Chelsea earlier this year and an additional Greater London store scheduled to open by the end of 2026, will make a total of 12 Whole Foods stores in the country.
“Since 2008, we’ve worked hard to innovate to help our customers save time and money when shopping for groceries and household essentials,” said John Boumphrey, Country Manager, Amazon UK in a statement. “We continue to invent and invest to bring more choice and convenience to UK customers, enabling them to shop for a wide range of everyday essentials and groceries with low prices and fast delivery through Amazon.co.uk, Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market stores, alongside our third-party grocery partners, including Morrisons, Co-op, Iceland and Gopuff.”
Following the expansion of same-day perishables delivery in the U.S. last month, Amazon will introduce the service in the UK next year for items including fresh produce, dairy, meat, seafood, baked goods and frozen foods, all available on Amazon.co.uk and delivered within hours.
Amazon is positioning its shift toward online grocery sales as part of the retailer’s broader commitment to UK operations. In June 2025, Amazon announced plans to invest £40 billion (approximately $53.8 million USD) in the country over the next three years, including building four new fulfillment centers and new delivery stations along with upgrades and expansions to existing facilities.
Last month, the company revealed how its Amazon Essentials line has been key to improving its position in grocery retailing.
