Aldi plans to open more than 225 new stores this year as part of the next phase of its five-year national growth strategy. The raft of openings will mark the largest number of stores that Aldi has opened in a single year in its nearly 50 years of operating in the U.S.
The new stores will open through a combination of organic growth and the conversion of select Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores to the Aldi format. Aldi obtained the competitor banners as part of its 2023 acquisition of Southeastern Grocers. Earlier this week, Aldi sold off the remaining Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores that will not be converted, totaling 170 locations, to a consortium of private investors led by the current CEO and President of Southeastern Grocers. Aldi is maintaining ownership of 220 Southeastern Grocers stores that will be converted to the Aldi format through 2027.
“When we announced our acquisition of Southeastern Grocers, we shared that we intended for a meaningful number of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets to continue to operate, and we’re delivering on that promise while also supporting Aldi growth,” said Jason Hart, CEO of Aldi in a statement.
Aldi Now Third-Largest Grocer in U.S.
Grand openings for the first several converted Southeastern Grocers stores are currently underway, with approximately 100 converted locations set to reopen as Aldi stores by the end of 2025. In addition to its Southeast conversions, Aldi plans to add to its established footprint in the Northeast and Midwest regions, grow its presence in the West with more stores in Southern California and Arizona, and enter new communities, such as Las Vegas.

Last year, Aldi opened nearly 120 stores, bringing its total store count to over 2,400 in 2024 and solidifying its position as the third-largest grocery chain in the U.S. by store count.
“Aldi continues to see more shoppers come through our doors as they experience our quicker, easier and more affordable shopping experience firsthand,” added Hart. “With our expansion across the country, Aldi is earning the trust of more shoppers in more communities than ever before, bringing us closer to becoming America’s first stop for groceries.”
