A consortium of private investors led by the current CEO and President of Southeastern Grocers Inc., along with C&S Wholesale Grocers, has acquired Southeastern Grocers and its Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket banners. Southeastern Grocers (SEG) had been sold to Aldi in August 2023, an acquisition that was completed in March 2024. Financial terms of the current deal were not disclosed.
The purchase agreement includes the grocery and liquor store operations of the Winn-Dixie and Harveys banners, encompassing approximately 170 stores across the Southeast, as well as Winn-Dixie’s existing liquor business.
For its part, Aldi plans to complete its conversion plans, announced in March 2024, changing approximately 220 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores to the Aldi format during a multi-year conversion process that is slated to conclude in 2027. Aldi and the SEG leadership will work together to ensure a smooth transition, with Southeast continuing to operate the remaining stores identified for conversion.
“We are profoundly grateful and deeply honored to continue serving the communities we cherish,” said Anthony Hucker, CEO, President and Chair of Southeastern Grocers in a statement. “Our culture and path forward are firmly grounded in our 100-year legacy — a legacy built on strong values and a shared purpose of caring for one another. As we reinvest in the store fleet, we are inspired by listening loudly to the voices of our customers, to elevate and revolutionize our customer experience and store offerings.”
