CVS Health Adds Consumer-Focused Chief Product Officer Role

CVS Health has named Amy Bricker to the newly created role of EVP and Chief Product Officer – Consumer, and hired David Joyner as EVP and President of Pharmacy Services. Joyner, a former CVS Health executive, is replacing Dr. Alan Lotvin, who plans to retire in April 2023.

Bricker will join the pharmacy retailer in February, reporting to Karen Lynch, President and CEO of CVS Health. She brings nearly 20 years of diverse health care experience, most recently as President of Express Scripts.

“David and Amy are accomplished leaders with proven track records of anticipating and meeting customer and client needs,” said Lynch in a statement. “David has deep experience in pharmacy benefit management that will help us deliver on our growth strategy for the business.”

The appointments come amid multiple media reports stemming from a Wall Street Journal article that CVS, Walmart and Walgreens are all battling a pharmacist shortage that is forcing them to cut pharmacy hours. Walgreens reportedly shortened hours at some stores for this reason in November 2022, according to Business Insider.

Walgreens Boots Alliance CEO Rosalind Brewer addressed the labor issue in a call discussing the company’s Q1 2023 financial results on Jan. 5, 2023: “We announced last quarter that we were working to really improve our positions with our pharmacy,” said Brewer. “So with these investments, our applications are up about 23%, and we’ve got accepted offers approaching about 40%. So in our minds, the brand remains strong and the intentionality to regain pharmacists in our stores, it’s working. Second, I will tell you that stores that are operating without reduced hours had Q1 Rx comp trends excluding immunization in the mid-single digits. And we’re seeing about nine percentage points better growth versus the impacted stores on limited hours. So we feel good about the direction we’re moving forward. We continue to make progress on the recruiting.”

Brewer added that the retailer had implemented new incentive policies and was leveraging its microfulfillment center capacity to better recruit and support its pharmacists.
