The National Retail Federation’s annual ranking of the Top 100 Retailers, based on 2024 U.S. sales, has remained remarkably consistent since last year, with the top 13 retail companies — led by Walmart and Amazon in the first and second spots — remaining essentially the same. Target slipped down a notch, from No. 7 to No. 8 in 2025, trading places with Walgreens Boots Alliance.
The list, compiled by Kantar, does reveal some key trends. As a group, pharmacy retailers have declined, most notably the now-bankrupt Rite Aid, which dropped from the No. 29 spot in 2024 to No. 40 this year.
Additionally, discretionary spending on pets also has seen a decrease due to pet ownership stabilizing post-COVID. PetSmart, at No. 52, saw a 1% increase in overall sales but a 3% decrease in stores, and Petco at No. 75 saw both overall sales and store sales drop 2%.
“As with recent years, I would say you could take last year’s list and just flip it over for 2025,” said David Marcotte, SVP of Global Insights and Technology at Kantar in a statement. “While the companies at the top of the list not only reflect those with the strongest retail sales, they are also a reflection of those that have remained nimble to a changing landscape from the impacts of trade policy and shifting consumer habits.”
