New York City-based pharmacy chain Duane Reade is collaborating with Poncho, a personalized weather alert service, to deliver relevant advice and coupons to customers in real time.
Consumers who use Poncho receive weather updates via text message or email tailored to their preferences. With the new collaboration, the weather service will become more rewarding, offering coupons for Duane Reade products that will help customers “battle the elements and their allergies,” according to a company press release.
The Poncho weather service “is a cool way to stay on top of the daily weather and its inherently variable nature,” said Calvin Peters, Public Relations & Digital Communications Manager at Duane Reade, in an interview with Retail TouchPoints. The partnership will help Duane Reade deliver “personalized messaging to our New York Metro area consumers when they need it the most.”

Potential alerts include pollen count, so if customers suffer from seasonal allergies, they will receive a special notification on days when pollen count is high, as well as exclusive discounts for allergy relief products.
The partnership is the latest in a series of initiatives implemented by Duane Reade as part of its Parallel Persuasion strategy, a marketing approach designed to generate ROI through omnichannel engagement.
Peters added: “At Duane Reade, we are always looking to reach our customers with creative digital and social resources that allow us to be innovative, but extremely relevant when it comes to our customer engagement efforts.”
