CVS/pharmacy has added a Drug Interaction Checker to the mobile app, designed to allow customers to use their smartphones to research how over-the-counter products may interact with prescriptions.
Users can compare ingredients by submitting the name of an over-the-counter product or active ingredients, or by scanning a UPC barcode with their smartphone camera. Ingredients then are compared with all prescription medications in a consumer’s pharmacy purchase history. Prescriptions can be uploaded directly from online MyCVS Pharmacy accounts, or they can be entered manually.
Potential interactions are identified via a comprehensive and continually updated database of drug information, according to a CVS/pharmacy press release.

The Drug Interaction Checker is a “convenient tool” that “empowers our customers to make important decisions about their health,” said Brian Tilzer, SVP and Chief Digital Officer for CVS/pharmacy. “Our goal at CVS/pharmacy is to continually find new ways of helping people on their path to better health, and this new feature demonstrates how we intend to harness the power of mobile technology as a cutting-edge health resource that addresses real needs of our customers.”
In addition to the Drug Interaction Checker, consumers have access to a variety of tools and features within the CVS/pharmacy app. For example, users can manage and refill prescriptions, view ExtraCare savings and rewards, order photo prints, and see deals of the day.
