Big Lots Celebrates Brick-and-Mortar Rebirth with Chainwide Celebration

While 218 Big Lots stores have been open for several months, new owner Variety Wholesalers is just now getting around to holding grand opening celebrations, complete with doorbusters and giveaways, that will take place chainwide on Oct. 30, 2025. As part of the lead-up to the event, from Oct. 2-5 shoppers can receive 10% off everything in the store (excluding prepaid gift cards).

Actually, the delay isn’t surprising considering the discount retailer’s whirlwind of a year. In September 2024 the struggling company entered a voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy to facilitate its sale to private equity firm Nexus Capital Management. After that sale fell through in December 2024, Big Lots  agreed to a sale transaction with Gordon Brothers Retail Partners enabling the transfer of Big Lots assets, including stores, DCs and intellectual property, to other retailers, including Variety Wholesalers. By June 2025, Variety Wholesalers had reopened the remaining 78 of the 218 Big Lots stores in the fourth and final phase of the retailer’s physical rebirth.

“We’re proud to bring Big Lots back — better than ever,” said Lisa Seigies, President and CEO of Variety Wholesalers, which operates a total of 600 stores under the Big Lots, Roses Discount Stores and Roses Express banners, in a statement. “Our team has worked hard to restore the value, selection and experience customers love. We listened to their feedback, expanded our furniture department and brought back an exciting assortment of seasonal goods at unbeatable prices.”

Additionally, Big Lots stores now feature an apparel department for the entire family, as well as everyday essentials such as non-perishable grocery items.

“Our store teams have been working incredibly hard to get shelves stocked and the doors open,” said Seigies. “We encourage customers who visited stores when we first opened to come back and see our expanded selection.”
