Coming off a fiscal year that saw the opening of 24 net-new warehouse stores, Costco is planning a total of 35 new locations in FY 2026, which ends in August 2026. Five of these new stores will be relocations, making for a net-new increase of 30 stores. The retailer currently operates a total of 914 warehouse stores with the majority (629) in the U.S. as well as 110 stores in Canada.
“We continue to see significant opportunities for expansion both domestically and internationally across the markets where we currently operate,” said Ron Vachris, President and CEO of Costco during a call discussing the retailer’s FY 2025 results.
The retailer boosted sales in both Q4 and the full fiscal year, which ended Aug. 31, 2025. For the quarter, net sales increased 8% compared to the same period the previous year, reaching $84.4 billion compared to $78.2 billion in Q4 2024. Full-year sales increased by nearly the same percentage, 8.1%, climbing from $249.6 billion last year to $269.9 billion this year.
Enhancing Store Checkout and Ecommerce Experiences
Vachris also touted Costco’s improvements in checkout technology implemented during Q4 that allow Costco employees to scan small- and medium-sized transactions while the customer is still in line for the POS. Then, payment can take place without the shopper having to remove any items from the cart.
“We also continue to make progress with our technology road map for digital and ecommerce,” Vachris added. “Enhancements this quarter included using data augmentation to improve search effectiveness, adding passwordless sign-in to our mobile app and creating a waiting room for high-velocity items such as Pokémon cards. These waiting rooms reduce the traffic from bots [and] increase the opportunity for members to purchase high-demand items while improving the speed and the stability of the site during peak traffic periods.”
