Pinterest is introducing Try on, a tool that lets users virtually try on products through the platform’s Lens camera function. Try on will initially support lipstick from brands including Estée Lauder, Sephora, bareMinerals, Neutrogena, NYX and Urban Decay.
Shoppers can virtually test different products by using the Pinterest camera and clicking “try on” to explore different shades. The program supports both swipe commands and text searches to help customers find the right color.
Try on won’t include skin smoothing or image altering effects, letting users see how the lipstick would look in a natural setting. This emphasis on inclusivity also includes a skin tone range feature, which allows shoppers to see similar lipstick shades on skin tones that match their own.
Similar technology is being put to use by Shiseido, which received a Retail TouchPoints 2020 Customer Engagement Award for its Made2Fit liquid foundation. Shoppers can use the bareMinerals MADE-2-FIT App to have the foundation custom manufactured in an optimum shade based on their skin tone and delivered in a bottle that has their name on it.
