Only a few days after filling its recently vacated CIO role from within, Walgreens took additional steps to fill out its C-suite, promoting Adam Holyk to Chief Marketing Officer and Joe Hartsig to Chief Merchandising Officer. Holyk and Hartsig will report to Alex Gourlay, Co-COO for Walgreens Boots Alliance.
The two executives will replace Linda Filler, who served as President of Retail Products and Chief Merchandising and Marketing Officer at Walgreens Boots Alliance, on April 1.
The promotions come at an uncertain time for Walgreens. The drugstore chain is still trying to gain regulatory approval to complete a $9.4 billion merger with Rite Aid, but the pending transaction has remained on thin ice due to ongoing antitrust concerns. Walgreens and Rite Aid also agreed to extend their merger process end date to July 31 to allow additional time to obtain regulatory approval.

Holyk began his career with Walgreens in 2011 in the company’s customer insights group. He previously held senior roles at marketing analytics consultancy dunnhumby and Canadian pharmacy Shoppers Drug Mart.
Hartsig joined Walgreens in September 2015 as Group VP of Merchandising Strategic Projects, and led the marketing, loyalty and digital commerce organizations. Prior to this, Hartsig was chief merchandising and marketing officer for Essendant, a Fortune 500 wholesaler of business essentials, and SVP of Merchandising at Sam’s Club.
