Target Shakes Up Executive Team To Kick Off Brand Transformation

Two weeks after Gregg Steinhafel stepped down from his position as CEO, Chairman and President, Target has made several changes to its U.S. and Canadian leadership teams.

Effective immediately, Tony Fisher, President of Target Canada will step down from his position and be replaced by Mark Schindele, who is currently SVP of Merchandising Operations. In his new role, Schindele will report to Kathee Tesija, Chief Merchandising and Supply Chain Officer.

During his 15-year career at Target, Schindele has played a pivotal role in executing new store formats, including PFresh, CityTarget and Target Express. He also has helped improve the retailer’s analytics capabilities and vendor partnerships.

Schindele’s 22-year history in the retail industry — and his experience in leading Target’s global merchandising operations team — makes him an ideal candidate to facilitate the retailer’s ongoing expansion in Canada, according to Target’s interim President and CEO John Mulligan. Prior to joining Target, Schindele held several positions at Macy’s.

“We have a committed team that is focused on delivering an outstanding shopping experience to our Canadian guests and getting our performance on track,” Mulligan said. “Mark’s broad understanding of the retail industry and his record of leading global operations will help accelerate efforts to drive improvements across our Canadian business.”

In the U.S., Target also is revising its executive team to improve performance. Three senior merchandising leaders have been promoted, including: Trish Adams, who is now Executive Vice President of Apparel and Home; Jose Barra, who has been promoted to Executive Vice President of Essentials and Hardlines; and Keri Jones, who will now serve as Executive Vice President of Merchandising Planning and Operations.

The shakeup is expected to help Target respond quicker and more efficiently to customer expectations, according to Kathee Tesija, Chief Merchandising and Supply Chain Officer.

Tesija explained: “By realigning the merchandising team we can better leverage our senior-level leaders, be more agile and deliver for our guests with a greater sense of urgency.”
