Alexandre Bompard will take on the roles of CEO and Chairman at French multinational retailer Carrefour. Bompard will resign from his current role as Chief Executive of Consumer Electronics at Fnac Darty to succeed Georges Plassat, who has served as Carrefour CEO since 2012.
In his new role, Bompard is tasked with “boosting the performance of the French hypermarkets,” according to a company statement. He also will be managing the planned initial public offering of Carrefour’s Brazilian arm, and decide how to proceed with the business suffering losses in China.
Investors hope that Bompard can help Carrefour catch up in the digitalization of retail. Despite Carrefour’s recent struggles, analysts are optimistic about the new hire.
“Mr. Bompard has an excellent track record in terms of long-term strategy, cost cutting, a strong knowledge of retail business and he was a precursor in terms of omnichannel strategy,” said Jerome Samuel, an analyst at HSBC in a statement.
