Over the past 18 months, Staples has implemented a Manhattan Associates cloud-native warehouse management solution at nine of its U.S.-based B2B fulfillment locations, and the retailer plans to deploy the Manhattan Active Warehouse Management (WM) technology at a total of 14 fulfillment centers by the end of 2026.
The entire Staples U.S. fulfillment network encompasses 6,000 associates who pick, pack and ship 2.5 million units daily from 36 fulfillment centers and 220 delivery locations, utilizing 12 million square feet of warehouse, storage, sorting and delivery space. Staples also processes orders for several marketplaces and wholesale customers, and the warehouse management system helps Staples seamlessly receive both B2C and B2B orders from numerous order management systems across several divisions and brands.
“With our broad and deep supply chain network, Staples today services over 98% of the U.S. with next-day delivery, and we are investing in the right solutions to serve our customers,” said Ryan Hanson, Chief Supply Chain Officer at Staples in a statement. “As we are currently shipping a significant portion of our network volume on Manhattan Active WM and have customers in mission-critical medical, government and private industry verticals, we place a high premium on system performance and uptime reliability to exceed customer expectations.”
Staples installed autonomous item-handling robots in its fulfillment centers beginning in February 2024, and the Manhattan solutions are capable of integrating control of the robots with its WMS. “We are delighted to partner with Staples to modernize their distribution technology and create a more intuitive user experience,” said Stewart Gantt, EVP of Professional Services at Manhattan in a statement. “Their innovative use of autonomous mobile robots fully leverages Manhattan’s embedded Warehouse Execution System to quickly connect to a wide range of material handling equipment.”
