Wonder Group, the “fast fine dining” retailer founded by serial entrepreneur Marc Lore, will purchase Grubhub from Just Eat Takeaway.com for $650 million, including $500 million in senior notes and $150 million in cash. The deal is projected to be finalized during Q1 2025, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.
“Wonder’s acquisition of Grubhub continues our mission to make great food more accessible,” said Lore, Founder and CEO of Wonder in a statement. “As we enhance our customer experience with selection, speed and variety, we’re excited to soon offer a curated selection of Grubhub’s restaurant partners directly in the Wonder app, alongside our owned and operated restaurants and meal kits. Bringing Wonder and Grubhub together is the next step in our vision to create the super app for meal time, re-envisioning the future of food delivery.”
Just over one year ago, in October 2023, Wonder Group acquired meal kit retailer Blue Apron for $103 million. In February 2024 Wonder opened a new food hall location in a Quakertown, Pa. Walmart, and in March 2024 Wonder raised $700 million and revealed plans for operating 90 food hall locations by the end of 2025.
Grubhub also has been in expansion mode, adding several retailer partners to its portfolio in recent months, most recently Office Depot and PetSmart. Additionally, Grubhub has expanded its advertising capabilities into a full-fledged commerce media network in partnership with Koddi.
