Minor League Baseball Team’s Pitch: Cashierless Shopping at New Stadium’s Fan Store

WooSox Market

The Worcester Red Sox (the Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox) has teamed up with Standard AI to open an autonomous fan store at the team’s newly constructed stadium, Polar Park.

Drawing on the team’s nickname, the WooSox Market at Polar Park uses AI-powered cameras and the cloud to offer a fully autonomous retail experience, enabling fans to shop for ballpark snacks and memorabilia and then pay without scanning, waiting in line or stopping to check out.

Standard AI retrofitted the existing WooSox Market with ceiling-mounted cameras and its proprietary computer vision software in order to accurately associate each shopper with the items they pick up. Fans enter the store, grab the items they want and then, using the Standard AI checkout app, simply tap their phone to walk out. Within minutes of departing the store they receive a receipt for their purchases.

“Worcester has a rich history of innovation, making it ideal for baseball’s first autonomous retail market,” said Charles Steinberg, President of the Worcester Red Sox. “The WooSox Market adds a wonderful convenience that means less time in line and more time enjoying our beautiful ballpark.”
