Delivery startup Gopuff has updated its services to make ordering easier with a new version of its app that was introduced Nov. 19. Ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, the company has introduced a gifting option that allows shoppers to send items to recipients who are Gopuff users, or even those who are not on the app, according to TechCrunch.
Gift-givers are prompted to enter a recipient’s address information and add a message. Once the order is placed, the gift giver and recipient are alerted via text messages notifying them that the items are being prepared. Recipients also will receive text updates regarding the delivery status of the order.
Gopuff customers may also now place orders even after participating stores’ closing times, with delivery scheduled to take place when they reopen. Customers can schedule orders for a preferred date and time and pick up orders at retail and in-store shopping locations. In-store shopping is available only in New York City and at BevMo!, which Gopuff acquired in 2020.
The new Gopuff services have been implemented during a challenging time at the company, which saw multiple rounds of layoffs during 2022. While Gopuff had raised $2.15 billion in new funding by August 2021, bringing its valuation to $15 billion, by March 2022 it began layoffs by cutting 3% of its workforce. These cuts were followed by another round of layoffs in July 2022, when Gopuff let go of both corporate and warehouse employees and closed 76 warehouses, a move that amounted to 12% of its network.
