Walmart Accelerates Clean Energy Commitments with Projects Generating Nearly 1 GW

Walmart is moving closer to its pledge of enabling 10 gigawatts (GW) of clean, renewable energy by 2030 — enough electricity to power 2 million households — with new commitments that will generate nearly 1 GW of electricity. These investments will add to Walmart’s existing portfolio, which consists of 600+ onsite and offsite renewable energy projects already in operation or underway in more than 10 countries.

The commitments include two community solar and distributed generation portfolios, developed by Pivot Energy and Reactivate, that include 70 megawatts (MWs) generated by 26 installations across six states. Once operational, they are projected to produce approximately 160,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of clean energy annually. That’s enough energy to support community solar subscriptions for approximately 13,000 households and enable about $8 million in annual energy bill savings; additionally, about $6 million of these savings will benefit low- to moderate-income communities.

Walmart also has executed long-term renewable energy purchase agreements in new regions, including its home state of Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, along with additions to the retailer’s renewable portfolio in Texas. Developed by NextEra Energy ResourcesEDP Renewable North America and Invenergy, these projects will add 842 MW of capacity to the grid and support progress toward Walmart’s goal of being powered 100% by renewable energy by 2035.
