The Retail Design Institute has named the Tempur-Pedic New York City flagship as its Store of the Year. The 3,100-square-foot store on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, which opened in Oct. 2020, was designed by CallisonRTKL to offer a “one-of-a-kind immersive digital experience.”
The flagship focuses on key themes of escapism, sustainability, access to nature, and multi-sensory experiences, according to the design firm. Each zone within the store is curated to evoke the importance of mental and physical health.
The interior of the store is visible from the exterior, and the location takes advantage of its storefront using nature photography like a window to a landscape beyond.
A highlight of the location is its custom-designed immersive bed pods. Each pod simulates stepping into a cabin retreat with nature views. Revolving scenes in digital windows show images such as a breezy meadow or sunset, and the content is designed to be refreshed every season.

Each landscape reacts to the customer’s movement within the pod, changing throughout the journey. Open, less experiential pods on the other side of the store allow for simple side-by-side comparisons of the mattress lines’ various tiers.
