Stop & Shop will introduce same-day online pickup at select stores in the Northeast as part of the company’s initiative to roll out 175 click-and-collect locations by the end of 2019. The service will begin in Connecticut at the grocery giant’s South Windsor store and will join 10 Stop & Shop locations in Massachusetts, eight in Rhode Island and one in New York.
Through the Peapod by Stop & Shop platform, the e-Commerce arm of Stop & Shop parent, customers can pick up their groceries in as soon as four hours. They place their orders on the Peapod website, select “pick-up” and choose a time window for driving to the store.

Participating locations will have four to six parking spots designated to customers using the online service, according to the retailer. Once parked, shoppers call a phone number to indicate their arrival, so a store associate can bring the customer’s items to their car.
The Massachusetts-based grocer said the same-day service grants customers access to a wider range of groceries that are available at their local store. This includes prepared food, trays and fresh items like pre-cut fruit.
Same-day online pickup costs $2.95, but new pickup customers can receive the service free for 90 days by entering a promo code.
Last fall, Stop & Shop underlined Peapod online pickup as a key element of its five-year plan to phase in a new look and shopping experience at its 412 stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island. The initiative started at 21 stores in Hartford, Conn., where online and mobile customers can park under solar-powered canopies to pick up their groceries. Stop & Shop stores on Long Island, N.Y. are next up for the store upgrade program, which is scheduled for later this year.
