Rent the Runway has opened four of its drop boxes at Nordstrom locations in Los Angeles, according to CNBC. Three of the boxes are inside Nordstrom Local stores, with the fourth located in a full-size location. The box placements are likely to expand outside of California after the initial rollout is complete.
The boxes provide shoppers with a convenient way to drop off rented clothes, helping Rent the Runway scale its customer base, according to COO Maureen Sullivan. This isn’t the first time Rent the Runway has tested out drop boxes: the retailer partnered with WeWork in fall 2018 to add drop-off points inside work spaces. The partnership has been a success, and Rent the Runway says it has seen a 180% increase in the number of returns it receives since the program’s launch.
Rent the Runway also has been expanding its audience with additional rental options. The retailer launched children’s clothing rental in April and home and bedding rental in March, as well as a cheaper subscription option in October 2017.
Nordstrom benefits from the partnership by giving shoppers an extra reason to visit their stores. The retailer also is piloting the Narvar Concierge network for in-store pickups and returns, which offers an opportunity both to improve the customer experience and gather data on consumer behavior.
