Seven & i Holdings has announced a major restructuring of its business, including the addition of approximately 1,300 new large-format 7-Eleven stores in North America by its 2030 fiscal year, which ends in February 2031. The company plans to add 200 stores per year, with the goal of exceeding 50% coverage of the U.S. population. Additionally, Seven & i will add 1,100 restaurants to these stores for an eventual total of 2,000 locations.
In its home market of Japan, the global convenience store giant plans for a net increase of approximately 1,000 stores during the same time period.
The retailer’s plans come just a few weeks after Canadian c-store giant Alimentation Couche-Tard called off its attempted $46 billion acquisition of 7-Eleven, blaming the Japanese parent company for failing to provide the necessary data for due diligence.
Plans to improve the food offerings at 7-Eleven stores have been in the works for several months: In October 2024 Seven & i Holdings announced plans to open 500 new “food-forward” convenience stores by 2027. That same month, the company created a new holding company for its non-convenience store businesses, with plans to consolidate the 31 entities and eventually go public.
