Walmart Taps Google, Amazon Vet For Combined Tech-Development Role

Walmart has appointed Suresh Kumar to a newly elevated Chief Technology Officer and Chief Development Officer role. He will draw on more than 25 years of experiences as he oversees the retailer’s rollout of new technology, reporting directly to President and CEO Doug McMillon.

Kumar was most recently VP and General Manager of Display, Video, App Ads and Analytics at Google. He also has served as Corporate VP of Cloud Infrastructure and Operations at Microsoft and spent 15 years at Amazon in various leadership roles, including VP of Technology for Retail Systems and Operations, and leader of the e-Commerce giant’s retail supply chain and inventory management systems.

Kumar enters the executive role as Walmart rolls out one of its largest-ever projects: next-day delivery for 220,000 products without any membership fees. The service is slated to reach 75% of the U.S. population by the end of 2019, and it will be made possible with an $800 million investment in improving warehouses and delivery infrastructure.
