It comes as no surprise that Amazon, which reported record profits back in July, ranks as the world’s most popular e-Commerce site, based on a survey of consumers in 174 countries. Amazon was the most-visited online marketplace in 58 of these countries, according to research conducted by Website Builder Expert (WBE).
The study ranked global e-Commerce retailers by their online “population,” and while Amazon may be dominating the e-Commerce market, the study reveals that Alibaba is running a close second. But while the two marketplaces’ total visitor numbers are relatively close, Amazon has a more global reach than its China-based competitor. Alibaba and its subsidiaries, which include Taobao and Lazada, dominate in East Asia, and Alibaba is a leading investor in Tokopedia, which is Indonesia’s marketplace of choice.
The top eight e-Commerce marketplaces are:
- Amazon: Online population of 1,216,306,113 in 58 countries;
- Alibaba: 1,072,076,950 in 15 countries;
- MercadoLibre: 341,044,208 in 9 countries;
- Naspers: 261,223,414 in 16 countries;
- eBay: 132,117,951 in 13 countries;
- Rocket Internet: 103,691,145 in 8 countries;
- Schibsted: 40,692,996 in 8 countries; and
- Be Forward: 12,465,441 in 6 countries.
