As Economic Pressure Increases, Holiday Shoppers Turn to Resale

This holiday season Americans are gifting pre-owned more than ever.

Amid soaring inflation, cost-of-living increases and concerns around product availability, Americans are showing an increased willingness to buy and receive pre-owned holiday gifts this year.

In a new survey 78%, or 259 million Americans, said they are likely to buy pre-owned gifts this holiday season. Among the factors driving consumers to resale are:

  • Inflation (51%);
  • Finding out-of-stock gifts (29%);
  • Avoiding shipping delays (27%); and
  • Forgoing the stress of in-store shopping (26%).

Many of these same forces are also pushing consumers toward resale to make extra cash as well, with 31% of Americans saying they have sold items on online resale platforms this year to be able to pay for holiday gifts.
