The
National Retail Federation (NRF) has released a statement supporting the introduction of The Marketplace and Internet Tax Freedom Act on behalf of the retail industry.

The bipartisan sales tax fairness legislation was introduced by Senators Michael Enzi, Richard Durbin, Lamar Alexander, Heidi Heitkamp, Susan Collins and Mark Pryor.

“The National Retail Federation applauds the introduction of this bipartisan piece of legislation that seeks to level the playing field between local, brick-and-mortar merchants and online retailers without creating or raising taxes,” said David French, Senior Vice President for Government Relations at NRF. “We appreciate the leadership of the bill’s sponsors and thank them for renewing their commitment to sales tax fairness.”

Due to the retail industry’s rapid evolution over the last two decades, including the rise of e-Commerce and mobile commerce, French noted that it was time for Congress to eliminate tax disparity, which “disproportionally impacts community and independent retailers. As the voice of the entire retail industry, NRF will continue to aggressively advocate for The Marketplace and Internet Tax Freedom Act with the hope that the bill moves quickly.”
