Tech Tops BTS Shopping Lists For College Kids

Parents of soon-to-be college freshmen will spend an average of $470 on technology for the upcoming school year, with laptops, tablets and mobile phones the most popular items. Amazon is the top shopping destination for these higher education tech purchases, according to a survey of 1,500 parents conducted in June.

The second-biggest expense, averaging $324 per student, comes from furnishing the college dorm room, according to this infographic from Rubicon. With luck the furniture will last: 61% of parents surveyed think their graduate will return home after completing college, and more than half don’t plan to charge them any rent — so it will be nice if the kids can at least bring back their own desk, chair and mini-fridge.
