Chargebacks Data: Average Disputed Transaction Tops $75

Disputed transactions come to an average of $76 each, and the average cardholder disputes 5.7 transactions annually. Winning one of these disputes can open up the floodgates: 87% of cardholders say that successfully disputing a single transaction would make them more likely to dispute another one.

While chargebacks represent lost revenue for retailers, the mechanics of handling them often fall to financial institutions rather than merchants. Roughly half of respondents say the primary reason they dispute a charge rather than requesting a refund directly from the merchant is that the bank offers faster resolutions than a retailer would. Find out more in this infographic based on the Cardholder Dispute Index from Chargebacks911.
