Amid labor shortages and dramatic shifts in consumer behavior, retailers are increasingly turning to “edge retail” solutions to enhance their omnichannel offerings. Edge Retail is the physical manifestation of a company’s ecommerce investments through automated, digitally enabled devices such as self-serve kiosks and intelligent vending machines.
According to a recent survey, 22% of retailers already have implemented some form of edge retail, while 33% plan to deploy the technology this year. Retailers ranked eyewear, cosmetics and apparel as the categories where the technology is most relevant. Overall, respondents were split in their opinions about using edge retail as part of an existing omnichannel strategy or as a new channel opportunity altogether.
