The latest edition of Indian restaurant chain United Coffee House aims to bring this historic brand into the modern era, with a design that nods to the past while offering a fresh take on the beloved classic.
The chain launched in 1942 in New Delhi and served as a hub for British soldiers during World War II. Now, with the new United Coffee House Rewind at the Faridabad Mall in the greater Delhi area, the restaurant is looking to embrace the spirit of the millennial generation while celebrating what the brand has always stood for — diversity, individuality and “the art of communal indulgence.”
Upon entering the 3,300-square-foot space, designed by The Melange Studio, patrons are greeted by a color-blocked green lobby with a ceiling heavily layered with wicker lanterns. Visually and physically separated from the rest of the restaurant, this lobby serves as a waiting area for patrons before they are seated. The centrally placed bar acts as the heart of the space and various seating options cater to different party sizes and preferences, with long private booths carved out along the length of the restaurant. Brass details, wrought iron accents and wicker/cane lights add warmth and character, while patented graphics adorn the walls, adding visual interest and charm.
The palette for the project was carefully curated to evoke a sense of nostalgia while remaining relevant to today’s trends with the use of materials like terrazzo and wicker, which have seen a recent resurgence in popularity. In fact, terrazzo takes center stage across the entirety of the restaurant: the front of the bar is designed in terrazzo inlaid with brass accents, all cast in-situ to create a seamless finish. A light grey terrazzo floor is subtly delineated by slightly darker terrazzo outlining the booths and central seating area, and the step-up front balcony is finished in wooden tiles that complement the terrazzo. Careful attention has been paid to every detail, from the font selection, reminiscent of French bistros, to the strategic use of brand colors throughout the interior. The facade, adorned entirely in glass, allows patrons walking through the mall a glimpse inside, and hand-painted calligraphy further communicates the restaurant’s ambiance and offerings.
