Retailers can probably blame #Snowmageddon2015 for the substantial drop in store traffic during January.
New research from Euclid indicates that store traffic dropped 6.9% year-over-year due to the sudden cold blast many areas experienced. Even more dramatic was the drop in traffic between December 2014 and January 2015 (19.3%). Sales in General Merchandise, Apparel, Furniture and others decreased 1.3% year-over-year. However, clothing and accessory sales increased 1.7% year-over-year.
Storefront conversion, which is defined as the number of shoppers who enter a store as percentage of total foot traffic, increased from 8.4% in January 2014, to 9.3% in January 2015. However, storefront conversion decreased from 11.1% in December 2014.
The best shopping day of January 2015 was Saturday, January 10. However, the worst day was Friday, January 9.
