Another week, another roster of breaking news stories and trends for us to go through!
This week, of course, we celebrated Small Business Week. The time of year where you visit your local mom and pop shop and show your support! And of course, who can forget Mother’s Day? Both are key holidays for the retail community: businesses and shoppers alike! Here’s a glimpse of a few headlines you may have missed:
Macy’s to debut new, off-price stores: The department store retailer is embarking on a new growth initiative that will include a new off-price business. Called Macy’s Backstage, the stores will average approximately 30,000 square feet and tout clearance goods from Macy’s stores as well as exclusive items from brands that have a 20% to 80% discount. Assortment will span across men’s, women’s and children’s apparel, shoes, jewelry, and more. The first four pilot locations will open in metro New York City in the fall of 2015.

Consumers love supporting small businesses: According to the 2015 Cox Consumer Pulse On Small Businesses, 63% of consumers visit small businesses at least three times a week to show their support. The reason why? Up to 71% of respondents said they simply have a desire to “buy local,” while others pointed to convenience (61%) and higher levels of customer service (54%). Despite the love of all things local, shoppers pointed to a few areas of improvement SMBs should focus on. Check out the results to learn more!

Mother’s Day is a bummer for most moms: Sure, consumers of all ages try to go out of their way for the mothers in their lives by purchasing (or crafting!) thoughtful gifts. But overall, 40% of moms say they are usually disappointed by the gifts they receive, according to SOASTA. Some give flowers, while others give jewelry and thoughtful cards. This year, people plan to spend $173 during Mother’s Day, up from $163 in 2014. This article provides some shopping tips and gift ideas.

Nordstrom tests curbside pickup: Sure, the service is only being tested in 20 locations, but this move from the department store retailer indicates a real sea change for order fulfillment. Imagine calling up your local Nordstrom, saying you want to pick up the dress you ordered and you’ll be there in 10 minutes? No hassle and zero stress of finding a parking spot!

The on-demand beauty market explodes: While this isn’t technically “retail,” this is still a super cool concept that brands and retailers can learn from. There are apps such as GlamSquad and the new Glam App, which are designed to provide consumers with quick and easy access to hairstylists and makeup artists. Basically an on-the-go salon. Cool, right? It would be interesting to see how brands and retailers can capitalize on this trend by offering styling services on wheels, or a brand ambassador who helps you pick out your outfit for a special occasion.
