Happy Thursday, friends and followers. In celebration of the weekend almost being here (yay!), here’s a quick overview of some of the week’s top stories. We’ll be keeping our eyes and ears open for more breaking news, so be sure to check out the Retail TouchPoints web site and Twitter account!
Sephora unveils new subscription service: Looks like beauty bigwig Sephora is trying to cash in on the success of Birchbox and Glossybox. The retailer has launched a new subscription service in three U.S. markets. Called “Play! By Sephora,” the new offering will provide customers with a series of samples focused on a specific theme. Although it may seem like Sephora is just hopping on a hot trend, its dedication to merchandising based on a theme shows that its putting more thought into the process.
Aldi wants to grow organically: That pun was intended. The low-price grocery store is trying to appeal to organic lovers by testing a variety of new products in stores. For example, Bloomberg reported that Aldi has added organic quinoa, coconut oil and cafe-free eggs to some store assortments. It seems like many grocers are hopping on the organic trend. Although it’s great that retailers are striving to provide more healthful options to shoppers (based on growing demand), it will be interesting to see how Aldi differentiates.
DKNY starts from social square one: Consumers have come to know Aliza Licht who became one of fashion’s first personas. Through the Twitter name DKNY PR GIRL, she gave followers an insider’s look at the brand, sharing everything from photos to videos and hilarious commentary. Less than a day after DKNY overhauled its social accounts and removed every trace of Licht, she announced that she would be leaving her post come fall. The move makes sense; Donna Karan recently stepped down from her post, and Licht recently came out with her debut book. We’ll be on the lookout to see where she lands in the future!

Google rebrands: In a move that many marketers are still trying to understand, Google has rebranded itself as Alphabet. But that doesn’t mean Google is gone completely. It takes a while to wrap your head around, but hear us out. Alphabet will be the larger company, or collection of companies. Google will exist with its search, ads, maps, apps, YouTube and Android solutions underneath it.
That’s all folks! Hope you all have a great weekend!
