Many of us probably have taken a ride on It’s A Small World at Disney, either as a child or with our children. Amazingly, the concept never gets old.
Since I decided to call this blog It’s A Social, Social World, I found the need to relate social media to the “small world” concept, which was fairly easy to do. It is a small world, because we can all relate to each other in certain ways, but technology has made it even smaller. We can now communicate instantaneously with people around the world.
Similarly, it’s always been a social world, but social media technology has enabled us to share thoughts and recommendations instantaneously with peers around the world. With ongoing advancements in social media technology, forward-thinking business executives have been scrambling to create the solutions and apps that will become successful, long-term components of the social landscape. A number of sessions during NRF 2013 addressed that quest, as illuminated in the article, titled: Beyond Facebook And Twitter: The New Age Of Social Media In Retail.
Other recent articles also have addressed a number of topics related to social media strategies in retail:
- Social Media In The Retail Space
- Duane Reade Uses Social Media To Drive Product Awareness

A March 23 webinar (available live and on-demand) will address how to drive commerce with social media. Titled: Drive Commerce Through Social Growth, the event features Ray Wang of Constellation Research.
In a new retail survey, Retail TouchPoints is collecting retailers’ current and future plans for social commerce, including insights around third-party social channels and new social commerce platforms. The survey, called Social Commerce Imperatives, is open and collecting responses in February and March 2013. The final report will be released at the beginning of April 2013.
In the scheme of things in retail, social media is still a new, growing, morphing entity. It will be fascinating to watch the changes during the next few years and how the channel shakes out. Which platforms, solutions, apps and companies do you think will survive for the long term?
