The pandemic contributed to a sweeping upward trend in internet usage that has continued into this year. In the minute or so it will take you to read this, Google will conduct 5.7 million searches and Twitter users will post 575,000 tweets. And from January to July 2021, the number of people that now access the internet worldwide jumped 10% to 5.17 billion people, or 65% of the world’s population.
More than 6 million of those people are shopping online in any given minute of the day, and the increase in internet traffic has been a boon for digital commerce platforms. Shoppers spend $283,000 on Amazon every minute, and Instacart shoppers spend nearly $67,000 a minute.
